Dating Dennis: In Response to an Ask

This is in response to Victoria’s Ask. It’s too long to fit into a normal Response.

The last dating update I posted included the demise of a burgeoning relationship, me sleeping with a friend and me stressing out about going out with my friend’s girlfriend’s boss.

Turns out that my friend’s girlfriend’s boss reads my blog so she saw that and did not take too kindly to it, so that post sort of made that decision for me, but we’re cool and (although neither of us can recall) I guess we made out on New Year’s Eve.

I sorta started talking to a friend of a friend. We had a bunch in common and got along quite well over text, but before we ever hung out, I got the sneaking suspicion that homegirl was just kinda into the fact that I was paying her a lot of attention and wasn’t particularly interested in exploring the possibility of dating. I told about my concern. She sort of denied only talking to me for attention but didn’t really deny that he wasn’t interested in exploring the possibility of dating. I was not satisfied with the answer so I stopped pursuing things, but part of me wonders how much of her answer was her actual ambivalence and how much was a defense mechanism to avoid having any skin in the game.

I’m not dating anybody seriously or exclusively, but I’m back on OKCupid, so I’ve gone on a few dates over the past couple of months. Of the women I’ve gone out with, I’m talking to two of them.

One woman is a 23 year old NYU grad who works at a lingerie shop. She’s really sweet, fun and cool and her voice kind of reminds me of Jennifer Tilly. She’s also kind of a stoner hippie California chick and I tend to be a little more high strung and traditional, so I wonder of we’re ultimately compatible. So far I think we’re both having fun so I guess time will tell.

I’m also talking to a 29 year old woman from Oregon who works at a credit card company. We went out once and at the end of the date, she said she wanted to see me again, acknowledged that I didn’t have her number and then suggested that I just email her. I took this as a major sign that she wasn’t interested so I had no intention of getting back in touch, but then she texted me two days later and we’ve been talking ever since. She seems like a very no-nonsense down to earth kinda chick and is definitely the kind of person who would fit in well with my group of friends (aka watching sports at Brother Jimmy’s), but I would like to see her burn a few more calories in expressing her interest for the ol’ boy.

So those are the irons I’ve got in the fire.
